We hosted a great group for the taping of One Kansas City Radio ‘s discussion on the upcoming Moon Festival. Guests included Meng and Justin from the Zigong Lantern Group, Sean and Kim from the Kansas City Zoo and Tina from Tao Tao Restaurant. Jackie Nguyen from Cafe Cà Phê led the discussion on traditions surrounding this festival and we heard more about the amazing lighted sculptures that Zigong Lantern Group is working on for the GloWild exhibit at the zoo that runs September 1 – December 11, 2023.
Fabulous discussion, delicious food and of course moon cakes were enjoyed by all!

The Dragon Boat Festival is a national holiday in China and the 16th Annual International Dragon Boat Festival will take place in Kansas City on the Country Club Plaza’s Brush Creek this Saturday, June 11th from 10:00am – 2:30pm. Originally to honor a third century Chinese poet, this cultural connection event promotes international friendship through exciting boat races on traditional Chinese boats.
Theresa and Rebecca Ng from Bo Lings recently took part in an interview along with John Phillips and Jan Armstrong from the Society for Friendship with China, as well as special guest Teresa Chien, Chair of the Xi’an Sister City Committee and President of the Society for Friendship with China.
Jackie Nguyen from Cafe Cà Phê led the conversation for One Kansas City Radio’s “Change Makers – Kansas City” series about this popular event recounting the origins, what this holiday means to Asian families, the tradional dish of rice dumplings (zongzi) and maybe a few blooper stories of how some racers have ended up in the water over the years.
Irvzila’s Hawaiian Grill will be on hand serving food and drink from their food truck.
Please enjoy listening to this lively conversation and we hope to see you on Saturday cheering on the teams!

Our team was fortunate to sit down last week with Jackie Nguyen, owner extraordinaire of Cafe Cà Phê, Kansas City’s first Vietnamese coffee shop, for a discussion on multi-cultural Asian traditions surrounding the Lunar New Year. This discussion was part of One Kansas City Radio’s “Change Makers – Kansas City” show with owner Theresa Ng, partner Nicole Ortiz along with daughter Rebecca Clark joining in on the conversation of family traditions in China, Malaysia and Vietnam during the most important holiday of the year. This holiday actually lasts two weeks and culminates with the Lantern Festival on February 15.
It was such a unique opportunity for these long time and new local Asian entrepreneurs to share in educating listeners with a personal glimpse into their traditions. Please sit back and enjoy listening to this fascinating discussion.
